Toyota halts fresh investment in India

2017 Fortuner

After the 10 year diesel ban and the diesel engine capacity ban, companies like Toyota said that they are halting the fresh investments in India , while taking a review , and will possibly hold some of the models that it had planned to introduce in the Indian market.

Shekhar Vishwanathan, Vice chairman and Director at the companies India subsidiary Toyota Kirloskar Motors said, " We will bring in some products planned, but fresh proposals will be on ice for a while, we will rework product plans, atleast till 2020. Some of the products that we had planned to introduce will be rethought."

Toyota recently set up a diesel engine plant with a capacity of 1 lakh unit per year after an investment of 1200 crore rupees. This plant is only able to utilise only 30% of its capacity and causing a loss to the company. " I don't know what to do with this excess capacity. We cannot live with the betrayal of faith. When I go to the Toyota headquarters in Japan for the next project , It is very hard to explain " Vishwanathan said.
